The crisis is far from over…

European procrastination will most likely have painful consequences for Greece! On top of that our government is hesitant, wavering and at times inefficient! It is not enough for our Prime Minister to tour the European capitals and attempt to convince our partners that the crisis is systemic. They know that but what they see instead is Greece's lack of determination to root out corruption, combat tax evasion and attract foreign capital. The government asks from the ordinary taxpayer and pensioner to bear the full weight! The damage will be irreparable…

Greece’s financial woes have deep causes. For years this country lived beyond its means relying on European subsidies and goodwill. Corruption is rampant and coupled with a bloated public sector you can easily figure out why our economy is neither productive nor competitive. Most weaknesses in our political system are inbred and there is an urgent need for sweeping institutional reform.

Real and lasting change can only take place if all parties and citizens realize the gravity of the situation we are in and come together as ONE! We simply cannot turn the economy around without political consensus and social cohesion. It will prove to be an insurmountable task.

Moreover, the European dream of political unity is fading and it seems that a monetary union that lacks the drive for a political and economic union will bring upon further instability. Another crucial factor has been the inability of the ECB to enforce fiscal discipline to the debt-ridden countries of the south (plus Ireland).

In any case, my point is that we, as Greek people, must also assume our responsibilities and do our best to change our mentality. On top of that a bitterly divided Europe must eventually find a common voice and address these significant problems with a heavy hand. Otherwise the prospect of unity, stability and progress will be lost forever with catastrophic consequences for the future of European citizens.
